2018 Bezos Scholar Amy Exposito and educator Scott Reed are passionate about art as a medium for expressing the complicated issues of mental health. Their community change project Creatively Speaking is a Chicago, IL community event that promoted different forms of art as a means of processing and communicating issues and emotions related to current events.
Amy and educator Scott created Creatively Speaking, an event where people could use different forms of art to help them express how they are affected by the challenges posed by the modern world. The event start with a notable speaker sharing about their experience contending with current issues that concern their community. The stresses of modern life constantly evolve but the role of art to mitigate stress will remain constant. This year’s event tackled the issue of mental health. Participants were able to fluidly move between various sessions that included dance, creative writing, and art.
