Become a leader for positive change with the Bezos Scholars Program.
2017 Bezos Scholar Anna Schumacher and educator Karin Fritz-Staley brought together their community for DLthriving upon recognizing the stigma surrounding the mental health of young people.
Through their Local Ideas Festival, they increased community dialogue around mental health as well as improved awareness and access to mental-health supports in the small community of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.
“DLthriving came about during a time when the Detroit Lakes community has been taking a greater interest in mental health,” shares Anna.
Through DLthriving, Anna and Karin worked to expand the community’s knowledge about the unique needs of young people in regard to mental health, create a common vocabulary with which to talk about this challenging topic and to showcase existing community resources through youth testimonials and a panel discussion with local mental health professionals.
