2016 Bezos Scholar Jacob Urbina, and educator Cody Mitchell, founded Elkhart Discovery Days after recognizing a need for more hands-on science in their school district,
Through Elkhart Discovery Days, Jacob and Mr. Mitchell worked to expose elementary-age students to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) through hands-on experiences involving computer literacy, a hovercraft, rockets, drones, Rubik’s cubes, slime, laser harp performances, student demonstrations, and egg trebuchet-launching contests. In addition to an afternoon of science experiences, “care packages” were sent home to inspire students to challenge the future and explore science with their families.
“Students were excited to investigate their own scientific questions,” shares Jacob. “The main purpose was to excite students to become more inquisitive, and I believe this happened.”
