2010 Bezos Scholar Jonathan O’Leary and educator Gail Heninger used their Local Ideas Festival to promote environmental awareness and advocacy.
Inspired by the environmentally conscious, low-impact footprint of the Aspen Institute Ideas Festival, Jonathan and Gail hosted the Greenovation Youth Summit for Davenport, Iowa high school students.
The Greenovation Youth Summit was a conference designed for 120 environmentally conscious high school students from various high schools in the Quad City area of Iowa. During the summit, students heard from local environmental groups and explored concerns and challenges for the environment on a local, national, and global scale and environmental brainstormed realistic plans to tackle these environmental challenges.
After the summit, attendees left equipped with the education, tools, knowledge, and resources to enact positive environmental change within their respective schools.
“The Greenovation Youth Summit increased awareness of environmental challenges both locally and nationally,” shares Jonathan. “Every participating delegation of students created their own unique goals to pursue in their high schools.”
