Harlem Shaking: Evaluating Gentrification in Harlem

2016 Bezos Scholar Yabundu Conteh, and educator Teng Yang of Democracy Prep Charter High School in New York, NY, challenged their community to think about the impact of gentrification on Harlem through their Local Ideas Festival Harlem Shaking: Evaluating Gentrification in Harlem.

This event capitalized on Harlem’s love of block parties, and engaged people young and old  in a lively and heated panel discussion on regional gentrification, , and its impact on people of color in community.

Yabundu shares, “The biggest success of Harlem Shaking was students saying that the event gave them the drive to combat an issue they’ve felt silenced on, or unable to address due to a lack of appropriate tools and a common language.”
