Lend A Hand

2009 Scholar Valerie Shen and her educator, Troy Arneson, hosted Lend A Hand, a program designed to promote volunteerism in the community.

More than 200 high school students attended the LIF, which opened with a film made by Global Nomads Group on Ana Dodson’s work to help Peruvian orphans. Students also heard about regional volunteer opportunities from Nicholas Wagner of the United Way, and Denny Roark of the University of Wisconsin’s HELP System on how volunteerism can be helpful during the college application process.

Valerie shares, “our primary purpose was for everyone to understand the wealth of volunteer opportunities they can get involved in in the community.”

As a result of Lend A Hand, more students signed up for the school-wide Spirit Day volunteer event, held annually at James Madison Memorial High School. An art piece showcasing student volunteer projects was created with the support of student government.
