2009 Bezos Scholar Yannik Trapman O’Brien and educator Brian Braddock worked to support the arts in their community through the Student Artists Festival.
Yannik and Brian felt that education is places increasing pressure and on students, encourages them to compete with one another and that the arts are often in danger of being phased out of schools due to budget cuts or simply because it is not deemed valuable, they decided to host the Student Artists Festival to showcase and nurture the artistic talents of students in their community.
“By creating an opportunity for students to be recognized for their incredible artistic abilities, and then be given resources to continue their passion, we can create a more confident, motivated, and encouraged student body,” shares Yannik.
The Festival culminated in an arts showcase featuring student visual and performing arts. During the event, student artwork was judged by a panel of local, professional artists culminating in the awarding of two $1500 scholarships: one for a performing arts piece and one for a visual artwork.
