2018 Bezos Scholar Alex Bremer and educator Lori Flynn created the Community Scholarship to encourage and support graduating seniors in Pomeroy, WA pursuing higher education by facilitating (and fundraising) a community scholarship.
Their community change project featured a fundraising gala dinner and provided scholarships for high school seniors, working to strengthen a culture of academic achievement in their small, rural community.
During the event started, attendees and high school seniors enjoyed dinner together. The community was able to better get to know graduating seniors and their post-graduation interests. After dinner, high school seniors shared their scholarship boards, wagons were raffled off, and scholarships were awarded.
"I am most proud of the growth I have experienced within myself," notes Alex. "I learned many great things about self care and how to be a great team member, and to this day I have been a better person because of it. I was able to lead a team that was very active in our group and I learned all of my team building skills from the trip to Aspen. I have been able to work with community members and communicate with people like I never have before. If I hadn’t attended the Aspen Ideas Festival as a Bezos Scholar to learn about creating a community change project, I would not have been nearly as successful."
