Hear from Marcos Silva, 2016 Bezos Scholar Educator as he chats with Steph Ng, TED-ED Innovative Educators Program Manager, on his experience as a Bezos Scholar Educator and Ted-Ed Innovative Educator.
The TED Ed Innovative Educator (TIE) experience has been life changing. The opportunity to share ideas and converse with 30 educators from around the world has set new perspectives on my work in education.
My project for the TIE program is connected to the LIF that my student, Michael Mireles, and I worked on. The mission of the South Texas Ideas Festival, or STXi, is to include young adults in the Rio Grande Valley in dialogue about culture, community and identity with local community leaders. Our festival fostered great conversations and my hope, with the TED Ed TIE project, is to create an educational platform that amplifies the work and ideas from STXi.
We take the conversations that happen at the conference and put them in classrooms. We widen the audience and engage more students through an outlet that students know well - we do it online. We push these videos through social media, our STXi podcast and the TED Ed website.
Our hope is that these lessons will allow STXi to live past a one-day event and become a platform for more culturally relevant teaching. Furthermore, these lessons will also encourage our students to be proud of who they are, to question the validity of the stories they hear and to empower them to be engaged young citizens in their community.
