Become a leader for positive change with the Bezos Scholars Program.
What projects and new ideas are exciting you personally, academically, professionally?
I'm currently working at the Advisory Board Company, a health care research and consulting firm in Washington, DC. A big part of my job entails following US health care trends, and though it might not sound like it, it's really interesting to track things like Medicare policy for ambulatory surgery centers or Maryland's global hospital payment model. The US health care system has enormous problems, but there's a lot of exciting innovation happening right now.
Have you been keeping in touch with your Bezos Scholar Alumni, and if so — how?
I've been lucky to live near a number of Bezos Scholars, so we stay in touch both via social media and by meeting up. I actually got delicious Mexican food in NYC with a fellow Bezos 2010 alum last weekend!
Which influential books, albums, podcasts, or films would you personally recommend to the BSP community of curious minds?
I've been learning French for the past couple years and have gotten interested in French literary history. I recently read La Princesse de Clèves, which was published in 1678. It's a fascinating read because the author, Madame de Lafayette, created an incredibly historically accurate story set in the sixteenth-century French court. For those curious about French culture and the history of the novel, I highly recommend it. RFI's Journal en français facile is also a great news podcast for fellow French enthusiasts.
Who or what are you finding inspiration in right now?
One of the big perks of my job is that you can volunteer during the workday, so once a week I go to a nearby elementary school and read with a first grader. I've been inspired by the kid I read to because he loves school and learns new things astonishingly fast. Kids can be incredible sponges for information. It inspires me to keep engaging my mind.
I've also been inspired by friends who have pushed themselves to donate their time to the causes they care about - I'm looking to do more volunteering outside of work.
