Apply to be Bezos Scholar and become a leader for positive change
The Bezos Scholars Program is a year-long leadership development program for high school juniors. Each year, 17 student and educator pairs are selected from across the U.S. and the African Leadership Academy to create a lasting impact in their community. Scholars build connection with peers and educators, get inspired by global leaders, and use what they learn to launch a community change project.
Since the program’s inception in 2005, 208 Bezos Scholars have organized community change projects in the U.S. and South Africa, drawing nearly 40,000 attendees. Previous projects have been organized on critical issues including gentrification, tolerance, juvenile justice, literacy, STEM education, civic engagement, and peer-to-peer mentoring.
The program kicks off with an all-expenses paid trip to the Aspen Ideas Festival, June 22-28, 2019. With ongoing support and $1,000 in funding, student and educator teams launch local community change projects that align their unique passion with a community need.
During their senior year, students are also provided dynamic and knowledgeable college advising support to help them navigate the college application process, financial aid, and so much more.
Please review the application criteria for schools and students here. Successful applicants are current juniors that demonstrate academic rigor, maturity, curiosity, and leadership. Students need to complete an online application which includes essay questions, a confirmation of support from their school principal, a nomination of an educator to participate alongside them, and two letters of recommendation.
